30 Practice Prompts for Musicians Day 17 – Relaxation and Tonus

Take note of your physical and mental state of tension or relaxation while you’re practicing. If you notice that you’re tense in a place that doesn’t need to be, find modifications to play in a more relaxed way. Adjust your posture.

Sometimes, you might also notice the opposite. Singers are often flat or have difficulty hitting high notes with ease when they have too little tonus. In that case, try some muscle activation: Sing with some movement such as walking in place, skipping, swinging one leg. Or activate your body for a minute and then pick up your instrument again.
